Geology is a holistic science drawing on a mixture of the physical and biological sciences. B.Sc. (Hons.) Geology blends observation, theory, fieldwork, laboratory studies and the integration of the basic sciences into an excellent qualification for many careers related to or outside the earth sciences.

Scope And Opportunities

  • A graduate in Geology Honours is eligible for admission to courses like M.Sc. / M.Tech. / M.Sc. Tech. in Geology / Applied Geology / Remote sensing / Geo-informatics / Environmental Science / Petroleum Geology / Mining Engineering, at various universities of India and abroad.
  • Oil and energy sector offers most lucrative careers for young geologists. A regular intake by Geological Survey of India (GSI), Central Water Resource and Development (CWRDM), Coal India Ltd., Mineral Exploration Center (MEC), Atomic Minerals Division (AMD) keep the geologists in demand. More specialized opportunities are offered by organizations like, National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA), Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Department of Ocean Development (DOD), Geophysical Research Laboratory (GPRL), Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, NNRMS, IREL, various IITs etc.


Formal teaching is supported by tutorials held for small groups of students, practical classes and field classes. Labs are well equipped with instruments like Microscopes (Binocular, Petrological and Ore-), Field Gear, Stereoscopes, pH meters, electronic balances, Survey equipments etc. A full fledged Geology museum is in the precess of development presently. The Department boasts off a variety of rare minerals, fossils and rocks which are on display.
